Better luggage handling at airports
Together with Vanderlande we shifted their focus to user-centred innovation. This led to a new concept for the control and operating system of Vanderlande’s baggage handling solution at airports, significantly improving workflow and intuitive access to information.

Vanderlande develops and implements innovative baggage handling systems and services for airports worldwide.
In the baggage control room operators and engineers make sure all baggage gets where it needs to be in time.
Planning the baggage loading for departing airplanes is a key workflow. Rescheduling is simple and clear.
On the Alert screen hardware errors and baggage issues turn into tasks, for easy collaborating and communication.
Easy navigable and interactive maps of the baggage system help solving issues in the field quicker.
A new traffic layer added on top of the map highlights congested areas, facilitating the optimisation of baggage flow.
Ultimately, it comes down to monitoring flight loading and maintaining control during disruptions.
That's me, exploring and prototyping different parts of the solutions.
The project context
Vanderlande, a technical company specialised in automated transport and sorting systems for airport baggage handling, recognised the need to shift its focus from purely technological solutions to user-centred solutions in order to innovate and add more value for customers and end users. Together with Fabrique we embarked on a collaboration to create a new concept for the control and operating system of Vanderlande’s baggage handling systems.
The process and results
Research into the ways of working of people in the baggage control room showed challenges around information accessibility, mapping and human errors. We prototyped separate solutions that were validated on-site and combined into a complete system and interface redesign. This resulted in one coherent tool focusing on professional use and intuitive information accessibility for people working in a stressful environment for their entire shift.
The product
A full-fledged frontend prototype of a new concept design for the control and operating system in baggage handling control rooms at airports.
Why I liked this project
This project was interesting and challenging due to the complex interplay between hardware, software and people in a professional environment. Design driven innovation really made a difference.
